For generations, Glooscap Band members have carried deep knowledge, resilience, and skill, often without a clear bridge to the workplaces where that skill is needed. The Glooscap Mentorship Transition Program was created to build that bridge. It connects community members directly to opportunities within Glooscap Ventures and its entities, Glooscap First Nation, and external Indigenous partners.

This program pairs participants with experienced mentors working across this network in trades, healthcare, administration, natural resources, technology, and beyond. Rather than offering training in isolation, participants learn alongside someone who knows the work and is invested in their success. Over three months, they build real skills on real tasks. As soon as a matching position opens within Glooscap Ventures, Glooscap First Nation, or a partner Indigenous organization, they move directly into paid work.

The goal isn't just a job. It's a lasting foothold: economic opportunity that stays within the Glooscap network and its partners and gives every participant a genuine, supported start to a career.

Program purpose

The Glooscap Mentorship Transition Program (GMTP) connects Glooscap Band members with experienced mentors across multiple sectors, provides three months of structured, hands-on training, and transitions participants directly into paid employment as soon as a matching position opens with their mentor's organization or sector network.

The program is designed to:

  • Build sustainable, long-term career pathways for community members

  • Keep economic opportunity within the community and its partner network

  • Reduce the gap between training and employment by tying mentorship directly to real job openings

  • Respect and incorporate community protocols, cultural values, and Elder guidance throughout

What happens

Application, interest/skills assessment, cultural orientation.

Participant matched to a mentor based on sector interest, skills, and availability

Structured on-the-job training under the mentor.

Participant moves into a related paid position as soon as one becomes available within the network.

Check-ins, continued light-touch mentorship, retention support.

Note: entry into the program is contingent on a suitable mentor being identified and having availability to take on a member. Where no mentor is currently available in a participant's sector of interest, the participant is placed on a waitlist until a match can be made.

Eligibility

  • Must be a Glooscap Band member (status verified through the Band office)

  • 16 years or older (minors require guardian consent and a modified schedule)

  • No prior work experience required — the program is designed for first-time job seekers as well as those transitioning careers.

  • Willingness to commit to the full 12-week training period.

  • Open to all sectors; no sector-specific prerequisites unless the sector legally requires certification (e.g., HR, or healthcare)

Intake and assessment

Stage 1

Stage 2 (Mentor Pool)

  1. Application — short form capturing sector interests, availability, and any existing skills or certifications

  2. One-on-one intake meeting with the Program Coordinator to discuss goals and answer questions

  3. Skills and interest assessment — informal, strengths-based (not a test) to help match sector and mentor

  4. Cultural orientation — overview of program values, community protocols, and available wraparound supports (transportation, childcare, Elder support, counseling referrals)

Recruited from within Glooscap Ventures and its entities, Glooscap First Nation, and external Indigenous partner organizations, across as many sectors as possible, including but not limited to:

  • Administration & office support

  • Trades (construction, electrical, plumbing, heavy equipment)

  • Healthcare & community health

  • Education & childcare

  • Natural resources, fisheries, and land management

  • Retail, hospitality, and customer service

  • Technology & digital services

  • Arts, culture, and heritage

  • Social services & community programs

Mentor Requirement

  • At least 1–2 years of experience in their field

  • Willingness to commit approximately 3–5 hours per week for 12 weeks

  • Completion of a short mentor orientation (expectations, cultural safety training, boundaries, how to give feedback)

Matching criteria

  • Participant's stated interest, mentor's sector and availability, and,  where possible, the mentor's insight into upcoming openings within Glooscap Ventures, Glooscap First Nation, or a partner organization.

Workforce Transition

The goal is to move each participant into a paid position in a related role as soon as one becomes available; this may be within Glooscap Ventures or one of its entities, Glooscap First Nation, or an external Indigenous partner organization in the mentor's network.

The Program Coordinator maintains a live openings tracker across Glooscap Ventures' entities, Glooscap First Nation, and partner organizations so matches can happen quickly, even if a position opens mid-training or shortly after.

If no matching position is open the moment training ends, the participant enters a transition-ready pool: they keep light-touch contact with their mentor and the Coordinator and are prioritized for the next relevant opening.

Participants are not required to accept the first opening if it's a poor fit; the goal is a sustainable placement, not just a fast one.

Success measures

  • Number of participants completing the full 12-week training

  • Number and percentage transitioned into paid work within 12 months of completing training

  • Retention at 12 and 24 months post-placement

  • Mentor and participant satisfaction (short surveys at program midpoint and end)

  • Diversity of sectors and entities represented among placements
