About the Role
Glooscap First Nation is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Accountant (CPA) to support the continued growth and financial integrity of the organization. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, and working in close collaboration with the Chief Administrative Officer, Chief & Council, and operational leaders, this role is responsible for delivering accurate financial reporting, ensuring compliance with funding and regulatory requirements, and strengthening financial controls across Band operations and programs. Essential Duties and Functions:
• Maintain and oversee the integrity of financial records, including general ledger management, journal entries, reconciliations, and financial transactions
• Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, providing insights and recommendations to support organizational decision-making
• Lead the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and adherence to reporting timelines
• Ensure compliance with Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) funding agreements, Glooscap First Nation Financial Administration Law, CRA requirements, and all applicable legislation and internal policies
• Support budgeting, forecasting, capital planning, and financial analysis for organizational operations, projects, and funding initiatives
• Monitor revenues, expenditures, and cash flow to support financial planning and sustainability
• Support external audits and ensure audit readiness through accurate documentation, reconciliations, and compliance with audit requirements
• Prepare and review statutory filings, including HST returns and other regulatory submissions
• Develop, implement, and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
• Manage tangible capital asset accounting, including tracking, reporting, and compliance with applicable standards
• Collaborate with management, Chief & Council, and operational teams to provide financial insights and support organizational priorities
• Support payroll and benefits accounting functions, ensuring alignment between payroll records and financial reporting
• Support the implementation, optimization, and continuous improvement of financial systems and processes, ensuring data integrity and efficiency
• Provide guidance and support to junior finance staff and contribute to team development
• Contribute to organizational financial planning, strategic initiatives, special projects, and emerging priorities as assigned
• Maintain strict confidentiality of financial and organizational information, adhering to ethical standards and conflict of interest policies
• Provide financial input and recommendations to leadership within established approval and signing authorities
• Foster respect for Mi’kmaq values, culture, and community governance structures in all financial practices and interactions
• Perform such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time that are reasonably related to the scope, level, and intent of this position, in support of organizational and operational requirements
Requirements
Education Requirements
Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation in good standing (required)
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required)
Advanced training or certifications in financial management, public sector accounting, or auditing (considered an asset)
Ongoing professional development and commitment to maintaining CPA designation (required)
Experience and Other Requirements
5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within public sector, not-for-profit, or multi-entity environments
Demonstrated experience with full-cycle accounting, including month-end and year-end close, financial reporting, and audit support
Proven experience working with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) and fund accounting principles
Experience managing or supporting external audits, including preparation of working papers and audit schedules
Strong experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis within complex organizational structures
Experience working with funding agreements and contribution agreements (e.g., ISC) is considered an asset
Proficiency in accounting systems and financial software (e.g., Sage or similar ERP systems) and Microsoft Excel
Strong understanding of internal controls, financial policies, and risk management practices
Ability to interpret and communicate financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders, including leadership and governance bodies
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing organizational needs
Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and a high level of integrity and confidentiality
Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced and evolving environment

Accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting
Audit findings (clean audit, minimal adjustments)
Budget variance management
Compliance with ISC and regulatory requirements
